ICOS protein optimizes essential T-cell responses to foreign antigens, fostering proliferation, lymphokine secretion, up-regulation of cell-cell interaction molecules, and effective B-cell antibody secretion. Crucial for efficient T and B-cell communication, ICOS is vital for normal antibody responses to T-cell dependent antigens. While it doesn't increase interleukin-2 production, it superinduces interleukin-10 synthesis. Moreover, ICOS prevents apoptosis in pre-activated T-cells and plays a critical role in CD40-mediated immunoglobulin class switching. It exists as a homodimer connected by disulfide bonds.
