The MIF protein is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is critical for the innate immune response against bacterial pathogens. Its presence at sites of inflammation suggests a role in modulating macrophage function to promote host defense. MIF counteracts the anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids. Although MIF exhibits tautomerase activity in vitro, its physiological substrates remain unknown, and the relevance of this activity to its cytokine function is unclear.
